His only clue to discovering his identity is a number, XIII, which he bears as a tattoo. His position is all the more uncomfortable as a band of killers is on his trail. This espionage story is set in an unspecified modern country, but it strongly resembles the United States. The long chase continues from one album to the next and Jean Van Hamme gradually reveals information about the hero's past, which seems linked to the recent history of his country.
