It is the third episode of a trilogy that begins with Premier de cordée and La Grande Crevasse. The action of this novel takes place in Chamonix, from 1933 to 1938. The story is the direct sequel to La Grande Crevasse. It tells the story of the burial of Zian, a high mountain guide, and the difficult life of Brigitte, and their son, Jean-Baptiste. All of Zian's friends are convinced that Brigitte is solely responsible for his death. Thus, when she decides to live in the village and raise her son there, the young woman faces the hostility of the mountaineers. In the context of the pre-Second World War, Brigitte, with her friend Peau-d'Ane, will organize a rescue for Germans in difficulty in the Grandes-Jorasses, which will allow her to be fully accepted by the community that rejected her.
