The political action of Adolphe Thiers spans almost the entire 19th century, from the monarchical Restoration in the 1820s, during which he made his first forays, to the Third Republic. He was the first president of the latter, from August 31, 1871, to May 24, 1873. Thiers was a politician of rare intelligence, whom he himself was careful not to underestimate, and he showed a great ability to perceive the deep aspirations of French society. A monarchist bourgeois at the beginning, he ended his life as a conservative republican, until he was overthrown by a coalition of monarchist deputies. Robert Christophe's book retraces the journey of this illustrious politician, a brilliant orator and historian, who dominated French politics for half a century.
